Inappropriately Long Hugs

I have been holding on too long. Sorry about that. I may have touched you too… in passing (should you be so lucky).

I left work last night at 3:30 in the morning and just before heading out into the rainy night, grabbed a coworker, kissed her wet face and then wrapped my arms around her… it lasted a little too long.

Inappropriately long hugs.

My coworker said as I was about to pass through the door, I’m thankful that I have my work family. Another coworker responded, we ARE family, we bicker, we fight and we still love each other day in, day out.

I have experienced every sense of the word family in the last few weeks.

My immediate family. My father and brother. My brother with whom I could spend endless time… happily and easily.

My friends. Who I trust will always show up. With whom I can share a sad space comfortably and lovingly.

My coworkers. Who ultimately forgive one another for rough days and difficult moments.

I’ve held on a little too long. I’ve felt you squirm a little, reengage despite wanting to pull away… err… Kate. Won’t. Let. Me. Go. Thanks, I just needed that hug to last a little bit longer for some reason. It can be a little uncomfortable but know, that in this moment, it's how I know best to express how much I love you.

(hard to believe, but sometimes, even I don’t have words)

(just be thankful we didn’t grow up together – my brother – frequent recipient of excessively long hugs)
