Pie vs Cake

I left for LA over the weekend leaving my signature blackberry topped cake behind and I returned to a beautiful blackberry pie.

So what happens when you have 3/4 of a cake and a pie in your refrigerator? And you are the size of me? And you are single and live alone? (I can make a strong case for cohabitation and relationships simply based on the need for a leftovers disposal system... never mind that I have reverted back to eating cup of noodles this week)

"What it really comes down to is whether or not you like pie or cake."

Burdened with this desirous affliction (excessive amounts of baked goods) I conducted a pie versus cake contest much to the delight of my coworkers.

(Tip: If you too would like to saddle yourself with an extravagant amount of sweet goodness, just dispute the value of a pie… this is how you find yourself with an over-abundance of baked goods.)

"The crust was delicious but the cake... well, I am just a cake person."

At first it was simply a curiosity. I went to lunch and returned with cake and pie, placing both in the kitchen for Emily and myself to taste. Emily knew I was "afflicted" with pie and cake… or is that conflicted? She was happy to help a friend out… then someone else popped into the kitchen, discovering our treasure. It caught on like a wildfire. What ensued? A steady stream of ED employees to the kitchen.

“Who made these?!”

“You know, I am going to get Anadel and see what she thinks.” Anadel arrives with Pam. They leave, Kevin and Karen arrive next. Shannon and Rasa make their way back. Arriving in pairs and trios from other parts of the ED. People traveled far and wide. Pie and cake tasted by EDCs, RNs, MDs, CNAs and NTs.

“Super buttery crust, so smooth.”

Amy (my co-nurse for the evening) informs the judges that she will not tolerate waffling. “You have to pick, man, none of this I don’t know BS. You either like cake or pie.”

"Ohhh but the texture of the crust, you just can't beat it."

Emily floats through again (literally and figuratively). “I know that I already voted but I should probably be sure.”

“I pick the pie crust and the cake’s berries.”

I was not born loving baked goods (as it turns out and for the record). I LEARNED to like them. Give me a chip any day. Actually, if you are taking notes, I prefer a delicious dip making chips an obvious necessity.

"I can't understand how you would pick the pie over the cake."

So it goes without saying, I have never been a pie eater. Not from the very start. I can't like it. Over time I have learned that pies offer an excellent vehicle for vanilla ice cream. In fact, I would prefer warmed berries, a crust crumble on top with a generous serving of ice cream. In this scenario the berries retain some semblance of their original character.

“If I had to pick one to eat before I die? Cake.”

So what did we learn? People have strong feelings about pies and cakes. It seems either you like pie or you like cake.

“They were both really good, one was sweeter than the other but it comes down to the crust, I really love pie crust."

And the pie wins. 10-8.
